Horrmonger's Horror Corner

Quick and Dirty reviews

This is where I shoot out my very important opinions on movies that I had thoughts about but didn't warrant a full big review. Enjoy.

Glorious (2022)

What the fuck is this movie, honestly. It was so bizarre that it almost ended up a little pointless. Like what are we supposed to take away from it, exactly? That Wes was actually a good guy somehow? That a serial woman killer could do something good? Sure he's going to be forgotten but that's not even really a punishment. I don't know. It's wild. JK was great of course, always love when he shows up in a movie.

I did walk away from this with a favorable opinion, just to be clear. I don't think it's a bad movie and it may, in fact, be a good movie. It just seems like a movie that you need to watch more than once, and frankly, I haven't felt the urge to do so.

Here Comes Hell

What if Evil Dead was a period piece for no reason, and also sucked?

The Midnight Swim (2015)

Not a horror movie so much as a good, ominous drama with a little sprinkle of horror dust on top. The found footage format was not great. I see the artistic justification for it but just found it jarring and awkward. Great performances all around, but calling it a horror movie feels like a marketing pull more than anything else.

Ready or Not

I remember seeing the trailer for this in theaters and being wholly unimpressed, but I’m happy to report that I was wrong as hell. Ready or Not is great. Lots of twists and turns, great performances all around, the family dynamics were believable, and the ending was fun.

Grace was sympathetic and likable but doesn't have much of an arc, and she's a MacGuffin even though she's the protagonist. The real character growth happens with Alex and Daniel, which is interesting but not really a complaint at the end of the day. Main characters don't HAVE to show major growth or anything, it's just a little odd that the focus is so much more on the family than her. Emily was absolutely hilarious, but I wish she'd gotten a higher bodycount. She accidentally kills two servants and then just kinda disappears until the end of the movie.

Nitpicks: I would have appreciated a little backstory on the butler with regard to why he’s so loyal to these people. Frankly, I don’t understand why any servants are allowed to stay in the house. For Emily to kill, I guess.

Highlight: The finale and Grace screaming at the driver who ditches her.
